It’s 111,000 words, with a strong happy ending and a critically-acclaimed, non-shifter Omegaverse. It features alphas, betas, omegas, male pregnancy, mpreg, heat, and knotting. Content warning for a violent and oppressive society regarding reproductive rights.Book Bitter Heat (Heat of Love Book 3) Review :
Another reviewer declared Blake the “Ruler of the omegaverse.” I’m wondering if there’s a crown and scepter that should go with the title, because I fully agree! Bitter Heat was so categorically dissimilar to the previous books in the series that it could have been an alternate dimension of the omegaverse created in the previous books were it not for the MCs having been introduced in Alpha Heat. That said, this book can easily be read as a standalone. There are overlapping characters from the previous books, but their roles are removed enough that you will not feel you’re missing anything (you will be, most definitely(!), but you won’t notice). However, this book will resonate infinitely deeper if you have read (at the very least) Alpha Heat, though starting with Slow Heat will give you the greatest advantage.I detested Janus in Alpha Heat. I pull no punches. He was a loser and a user and I held him in zero regard. Because of that, I really was quite leery about this book, but Kerry! How could I not read Kerry?! So I jumped in and asked for an ARC…and I couldn’t be more glad I did!Kerry is contracted to an immoral, loathsome, malevolent man, and despite this creature being in prison for the rest of his life, Kerry is still subjected monthly to the very treatment that landed his “alpha” in that prison. Janus, having recovered from a second bout of the same illness that landed him under his cousin’s omega’s care originally (when I hated him), has decided it is time to start a new path in life, one in which he cares for others as a nurse. Staying at Kerry’s uncle Zeke/unofficially adopted pater’s boarding house, the two men are in constant contact, something Kerry is determined to have nothing to do with.Watching Kerry’s pain, anger, hopelessness, and terror brought tears to my eyes. His plight is so far beyond imagining that I couldn’t help but mourn what his life should have been. Janus is only fed bits and pieces through most of the book, but his alpha wants nothing more than to protect, soothe, and care for the decimated soul of the beautiful omega. This story starts slowly. It took me a bit to get into it, unlike the previous books, but again, polar opposite styling, so do keep that in mind and don’t give up. It’s worth the wait! This is a twisty turvy, lay everything out neatly and then run a tornado through it kind of story. The secondary characters are many, from those actually in the mountains the men live in to those who write or visit the city at the base of the mountain. Zeke plays heavily, as does the omega of the doctor Janus works with. His name is Fan, and I’ve already told the author what I think about what he does and what he’s never received that he deserves so richly. Unsurprisingly, the incarcerated alpha’s parents are just as narcissistic as their child, and I wanted to smack them – repeatedly.By the end of this book I was in tears again, but for a wholly different reason. These two men deserve to never have another day of sorrow in their lives, and who would’ve thought I’d say that about Janus?!I’m rating this at 4.5 stars, rounding up for sites that don’t accept halves. I highly recommend this book, this series, and this author!!!I voluntarily read an ARC copy of this book for Divine Magazine from the author with hopes for but no obligation to provide a review.**Same worded review will appear on Divine Magazine, Goodreads, and Amazon.com.** There is nothing in this world that turns me off more than when an author reveals her ignorance through her writing.Fiction or not, there is no time when is is appropriate to portray a physician as a teacher of nurses. The two fields are worlds apart and completely unrelated to one another. This only serves to perpetuate the misconceptions of a patriarchal culture and a misogynistic philosophy and to think that a female writer has endorsed such thinking by putting forth such garbage is beyond comprehension!Madam, you insult nurses everywhere!
