After finishing this book, 'The Rising' I got curious and had to look up shipwrecks recovered off the South Carolina coast. Fascinating subject. So psychic Simon and his lover Detective Vic are now living together, still feeling out their relationship, open about sharing their concerns and getting over themselves. It's not easy seeing your loved one in danger and both men experience enough of that. Too bad Simon's visions don't give details other than a feeling of doom.Another case for Vic and his work partner Ross, this time suicides which turn out to be murders. The bodies are piling up and Simon is assisting as only he can. Meanwhile a winter storm is blowing into Myrtle Beach and the residents there are concerned. Pack up and evacuate or wait it out. Living in Houston and going thru Hurricane Harvey, the constant updates on the weather, the questions amongst friends, having a storm approach like that, knowing flooding will occur and wanting to be prepared -- This story covered it without overstating. There are vignettes that touch on so many areas, making this story more than a police procedural, finding a shipwreck, or renovating a colonial mansion. There's a brief history lesson of South Carolina during the Revolution, with slavery and plantations - Of smuggling and privateers, harsh justice and lawlessness. How greed can corrupt.Now if what I took away from the story is correct. . . The ship Annabelle was boarded, taken over, her captain shot and likely killed, the ship sinking, and the crew taken, held, and sentenced to hang in the closest town. Yet the captain somehow lived after being shot at close range in his ship cabin, or if he wasn't shot and was hit over the head, he was injured. He lived through getting to shore, and eventually shackled and tied up, then hung with his men. That's a lot to think about, that the captain was coherent enough to remember anything. Wouldn't pain affect his memory? I would think a vengeful ghost would want to go after those that captured and sunk the ship. I'd question how a ghost would remember surnames, family lineage, two centuries on. As prisoners they were locked up, may not have met their accusers let alone a trial. As pirates they sailed the coast, the leaders in this town were probably strangers, not even their patron was there. So it's hard to grasp the concept of all this happening. . . Makes for a good ghost story though! Despite that niggle about Annabelle's captain, the story is very enjoyable and yes I gave it high marks. - Dan's Wife I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.Between a winter storm bearing down on Myrtle Beach, a string of suicides that might be murders, visions of pirates and privateers, and a poltergeist troubling the construction crew at a local historical manor, psychic medium Simon and his homicide detective boyfriend Vic have a lot on their plates this time around. The action was well paced and as always I couldn't wait to see what would happen next with Simon, Vic, and friends.With The Rising, Morgan Brice delivered another page turner that kept me engaged and reading until the wee hours of the morning. I enjoyed this story just as much as the previous Badlands installations. The plot had many facets that Brice tied together in an entertaining and interesting way, and the relationship between Simon and Vic continues to be believable and compelling (not to mention steamy).Keep up the great work, Morgan Brice! Can't wait for the next one!
